The 0.2Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.8Pb(Zr0.5Ti0.5)O3 (0.2PZN-0.8PZT) ceramic system exhibits excellent piezoelectric properties; however, its high sintering temperature (~1,250°C) causes severe PbO volatilization, increases processing cost, and limits co-firing with low-melting-point electrodes in multilayer devices. In this study, LiBiO2 was introduced as a sintering aid to enable lowtemperature densification of 0.2PZN–0.8PZT ceramics. The optimal composition of x = 0.3 mol% sintered at 1,050°C achieved d33 = 367 pC/N, kp = 0.54, and εT33/ε0 = 1,643. The Curie temperature was also enhanced to 347.8°C, compared with 297.2°C for the reference specimen sintered at 1,250°C. These results demonstrate that LiBiO2 addition enables a 200°C reduction in sintering temperature while maintaining piezoelectric performance and improving thermal stability.

In this study, we systematically investigated the effects of thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) conditions on the electrical characteristics of conductive-filament-based volatile threshold switching memristors with a Pt/Al₂O₃/Ag structure. Although volatile threshold switching memristors have attracted significant attention for neuromorphic computing applications such as spiking neural networks, the impact of dielectric deposition conditions on their switching behavior remains relatively unexplored. The number of ALD cycles was varied from 40 to 200, and the deposition temperature was varied from 50 to 250°C to evaluate their effects on threshold voltage (Vth), off-state resistance (Roff), and device yield. Devices fabricated using 75–150 ALD cycles showed clear volatile threshold switching behavior with relatively high device yield, whereas excessively low or high cycle numbers resulted in short-type and open-type failures, respectively. In addition, Vth and Roff tended to increase at higher deposition temperatures, while the device yield significantly degraded above 150°C. These results indicate that the number of ALD cycles and the deposition temperature define a critical process window for achieving volatile threshold switching while suppressing both short-type and open-type failures. This study provides practical guidelines for optimizing dielectric ALD conditions in conductive-filament-based volatile threshold switching memristors for future neuromorphic hardware applications.

J Electr Electron Mater 2026;39(5):462-470.
Published online September 1, 2026
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JEEM.2026.39.5.2
Two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) magnets have attracted enormous attention as an emerging material platform for magnetism, spintronics, and multifunctional applications. Their single-crystalline layered structures, layer-number controllability, and unique 2D properties provide unique opportunities that are difficult to achieve in conventional magnetic materials. However, the discovery and development of new 2D magnetic compounds require considerable time and effort, and only a limited number of these materials have been reported to be suitable for practical use. Therefore, materials engineering based on already established 2D vdW magnets has become an important research direction to explore new characteristics and find a practical route for device applications. This review summarizes recent materials engineering pathways for 2D vdW magnets. The main contents focus on the engineering strategy through electrostatic, chemical, lattice, symmetry, and heterostructure ways. These approaches provide practical design routes for tailoring magnetic properties beyond intrinsic 2D vdW magnets. Further progress will require broader application to various types of materials and delicate optimization that connects expanding fundamental magnetism with electromagnetic device applications.

Structural Stability and Electromechanical Response of Lead-Free (Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3‒SrTiO3 Ceramics Under A-Site Strontium Non-Stoichiometry
Yubin Kang, Trang An Duong, Gwang-Hwi Jeong, Chang Won Ahn, Yong-Jai Kwon, Hyoung-Su Han

Lead-free (Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3 (BNT)-based incipient piezoelectrics are highly promising for high strain actuators, but the high electric fields (4 ~ 6 kV/mm) required for activation limit practical device integration. In the current literature, large strains are frequently attributed to local structural variations like microscopic core-shell architectures. This work systematically investigates an alternative pathway by introducing A-site Strontium (Sr) excess non-stoichiometry into 0.74(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3‒0.26SrTiO3 (BNST26) ceramics. Microstructural and X-ray diffraction analyses reveal highly dense, uniform matrices completely devoid of micro-scale core-shell boundaries or macroscopic symmetry distortions, revealing that Sr non-stoichiometry diverges from typical Bi-excess mechanisms. Interestingly, despite negligible variations in overall macro-scale strain behavior across the composition series, a peak normalized strain (Smax/Emax) of approximately 804 pm/V is achieved at a low driving field of 2 kV/mm for the 1 mol% Sr-excess specimen (x = 0.010). These results indicate that while Sr non-stoichiometry weakly influences nanoscale stability, it can be inferred that subtle modifications of local defect configurations optimize switching energy barriers, enabling high-strain, low-drive-field performance in lead-free relaxors.

J Electr Electron Mater 2026;39(4):374-381.
Published online July 1, 2026
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JEEM.2026.39.4.6
The dielectric and piezoelectric properties of the ferroelectric BaTiO3 were measured and analyzed using both strong and weak electric field conditions. To measure the electric field induced polarizations and strains, a high voltage source and the measuring circuit were used and the dielectric constants were measured with an impedance analyzer. The spontaneous polarization of BaTiO3 at room temperature was calculated as 17 μC/cm2 based on the lattice structure and internal ion location, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. The polarization and strain hysteresis curve according to the electric field were analyzed in terms of lattice structure and ion position. The magnitude of remanent polarization is proportional to the offset distance of Ti4+ ion from the lattice center. The magnitude of dielectric permittivity is proportional to the degree to which Ti4+ ion can move freely inside the lattice. The magnitude of piezoelectric constant d33 is proportional to how much Ti4+ ion distorts the lattice as it moves inside the lattice.

The expansion of smart healthcare and wearable electronics has intensified the need for fabric-based sensors that integrate conformally with the human body for continuous bio signal monitoring. However, the heavy reliance of conventional devices on external batteries remains a major obstacle to commercialization, necessitating the development of flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters that convert biomechanical energy into sustainable power. Here, we present a highly flexible and wearable piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) fabricated by a screen-printing of BaTiO3 nanoparticlePDMS composites onto a fabric substrate. An optimized piezo-ceramic filler concentration of 70 wt% yielded a peak output voltage of 0.52 V and a current of 40 nA under the mechanical bending deformations. The fabricated PEH demonstrated exceptional mechanical and electrical stability, showing no performance degradation of over 5,000 repetitive bending cycles. These results indicate that a PEH can function as a stable self-powered source within complex clothing environments, offering a promising pathway for next-generation autonomous wearable sensor systems.

The ability to manipulate and probe biomolecules at the single-molecule level has become an essential approach for understanding molecular interactions, conformational dynamics, and nanoscale transport phenomena. Advances in experimental techniques have enabled precise control of individual molecules with high spatial resolution and piconewton-level force sensitivity. These developments have significantly expanded the capability of studying biomolecular mechanics and dynamics beyond conventional ensemble measurements. A variety of physical strategies have been developed for single-molecule manipulation, including mechanical-force-based approaches, electric-field-driven methods, and nanoscale structural confinement techniques. Mechanical-force-based methods, such as optical tweezers, magnetic tweezers, and atomic force microscopy, enable direct measurement of molecular mechanical responses. Electric-field-based manipulation, represented by dielectrophoresis, allows noncontact control of particles and biomolecules through polarization effects in non-uniform electric fields. In addition, nanopore-based systems employ nanoscale confinement to regulate molecular transport and residence behavior. This review provides an overview of representative single-molecule manipulation techniques based on mechanical, electrical, and structural control and discusses their fundamental principles and implementation strategies.

Bismuth layer-structured ferroelectrics with high Curie temperatures have recently attracted significant attention as promising candidates for high-temperature piezoelectric applications. However, the conventional solid-state reaction method entails high-temperature processing that induces bismuth volatilization, thereby degrading device reliability. In this study, we employed a co-precipitation method enabling atomic-level mixing to significantly lower the synthesis temperature of Nb/Tadoped Bi4Ti3O12 ceramics compared to the solid-state reaction method. Experimental results demonstrated that the coprecipitation method yielded a pure single phase at 600℃ without intermediate phases. Furthermore, the synthesized nanopowders, with an average size of 100 nm, lowered the onset temperature of sintering shrinkage to 650℃, approximately 200℃ lower than that of the solid-state counterpart. The low-temperature synthesis process proposed in this work is expected to contribute to the performance enhancement of high-temperature piezoelectric devices by effectively suppressing bismuth volatilization and ensuring compositional stability.

The continuous rise of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions highlights the urgent need for sustainable air purification technologies. Current Direct Air Capture (DAC) filters often rely on toxic amines, which limit long-term stability and safe application. Here, we report a non-toxic PAN-based nanofiber air filter fabricated by electrospinning and urea-assisted carbonization. Structural analyses confirmed the introduction of nitrogen functionalities that enhanced CO₂ affinity, while SEM and FT-IR revealed graphitic carbon formation. In air-chamber tests, the optimized carbonized nanofiber reduced CO₂ concentration from 25,000 ppm to 2,000 ppm, a level generally regarded as acceptable for indoor environments, while simultaneously removing over 95% of PM10, PM2.5, and PM0.1 particulates. This dual functionality, combined with facile fabrication and material safety, demonstrates strong potential for PAN-derived carbon nanofiber membranes in DAC systems and eco-friendly air purification devices. These findings suggest a viable pathway toward scalable, sustainable air-filter technologies for carbon-neutral applications.

(La1-xBixSr0.3)FeO₃ ceramics exhibiting excellent magnetoresistance were synthesized via the conventional solid-state reaction method. The structural and electrical properties were investigated as a function of Bi3+ content to evaluate their potential application as temperature sensors. And the sintering temperature and time were 1,200℃ and 4 h, respectively. The structural and electrical properties were investigated as a function of Bi content. With increasing Bi substitution, a slight enhancement in both average grain size and relative sintered density was observed. In particular, the specimen with x = 0.3 exhibited an average grain size of approximately 0.82 μm. All samples demonstrated negative temperature coefficient of resistance (NTCR) behavior, and the electrical resistivity decreased with increasing Bi content. The resistivity of the (La0.4Bi0.3Sr0.3)FeO₃ composition was 4.68 mΩ-cm at 25°C. Additionally, the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) and the B25/75-value, which quantify the sensitivity of resistivity to temperature variations, were found to increase with Bi content. (La0.4Bi0.3Sr0.3)FeO₃ sample exhibited a TCR of 0.43%/°C and a B25/75-value of 1,096 K at room temperature. The electrical conduction mechanism of the (La1-xBixSr0.3)FeO₃ system was well described by the small polaron hopping model, wherein thermally activated charge carriers hop between localized Fe-O-Fe sites via electron-phonon interactions.

Porous polymeric structures with piezoelectric properties have attracted considerable attention in the fields of biomaterials and tissue engineering due to their ability to convert mechanical stimuli into electrical signals. However, conventional fabrication methods for porous structures often face limitations in controlling pore architecture, maintaining structural uniformity, and achieving process reproducibility, in addition to requiring complex processing conditions. To address these issues, we propose a facile and reproducible fabrication method for porous poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) piezoelectric sponges using molded sugar cubes as sacrificial pore templates. By adjusting the particle size of the sugar templates, the pore size and distribution of the sponges could be effectively controlled, and a uniform open-pore network was achieved. The fabricated sponges were evaluated with a focus on pore morphology, mechanical behavior, and piezoelectric performance depending on the sugar particle size, and these evaluations confirmed the structural properties and functional efficacy. This study presents a simple and reproducible fabrication strategy along with a quantitative analysis method for porous structures, which is expected to enhance process accessibility and practical applicability in the development of piezoelectric polymer-based biomaterial platforms.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2025.38.4.12
The composite specimens of (1-x)(La0.7Sr0.3)MnO₃-xBaTiO₃ (x = 0.05 ~ 0.3) were synthesized using the conventional solid-state reaction method, and the sintering temperature and time were 1,300℃ and 3 hours, respectively. As a result of observing the structural characteristics, the crystal structure of LSMO-BT solid solution was shown in which the rhombohedral LSMO phase and the tetragonal BT phase were separated and distributed, respectively. And fine grains having relatively small and uniformly distributed grains with sizes ranging from approximately 0.4 to 0.5 μm and pores within the specimens were observed. Notably, variations in the BT content did not significantly affect the grain size or porosity distribution, and a relative density of about 90% or more was shown. The resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR), and B25/65-value of the 0.7LSMO-0.3BT specimen at room temperature showed the highest values of 1.94 Ω-cm, 0.292 %/℃, and 464 K, respectively. The resistivity behavior of the LSMO-BT composites matched well with the small polaron hopping conduction model.

In parallel with the efforts to improve the device performance in modern integrated circuits, it is necessary to downscale their core components, field-effect transistors (FETs), generally gauged by their physical gate length. Upon such device scaling, the emergence of the short-channel effect impedes further scaling into the nanometer scale in the silicon VLSI (Very-Large-Scale-Integration) system. To address this issue, two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, leveraging their atomically thin thickness and dangling-bond-free characteristics, are being highlighted as a material solution for future scaling technology without severe mobility degradation. Despite the expected ideal physical properties, 2D semiconductors have yet to realize their full potential owing to the limited development of integration technology. In this context, we survey and review the tailored van der Waals integration technologies for 2D FETs. In particular, we provide an in-depth study of both van der Waals integrated contact and dielectric methods along with an explanation of customized materials. In essence, this van der Waals integrationcentered approach will be a core strategy to implement the high-performance 2D transistors that meet the demand of FET miniaturization.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2025.38.2.3
Piezoelectric thin films have become increasingly significant in applications such as MEMS devices, wearable electronics, and lab-on-a-chip systems due to the miniaturization and integration of electronic devices. For piezoelectric thin films, even when an electric signal is applied in the thickness direction, greater deformation can often be observed in the in-plane direction, which is perpendicular to the electric field. Therefore, piezoelectric thin film devices are frequently designed using the transverse mode. As a result, it is crucial to evaluate piezoelectric thin films by measuring their transverse piezoelectric coefficient. This tutorial paper introduces a method for evaluating the effective transverse piezoelectric coefficient (e31,f) of piezoelectric thin films using laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV). Additionally, the paper outlines a step-by-step procedure for measuring e31,f while using Bi1/2Na1/2TiO3-based piezoelectric thin films as an example. This tutorial is expected to provide a practical and valuable method for measuring and analyzing the transverse piezoelectric properties, thereby supporting the development of new piezoelectric thin film materials.

In this study, we proposed β-Ga₂O₃ JFET using nitrogen doping and analyzed the electrical characteristics. In β-Ga₂O₃, nitrogen ions act as a deep acceptor and are used to implement the current blocking layer. By using this characteristic of the nitrogen ion, in the proposed JFET, nitrogen ions are used to obtain gate control and pinch off the channel of the JFET. The numerical TCAD simulation was performed to design and analyze the proposed JFET. The simulated forward and reverse characteristics of the proposed JFET were obtained as a function of JFET width and nitrogen doping concentration. The maximum breakdown voltage of 1.7 kV was obtained with the on-resistance of 16.7 mΩ·cm2 when the channel width was 1.5 μm and nitrogen doping concentration is 1×1018/cm3, respectively.

Hazardous gas leakage incidents rank among the most serious safety accidents, leading to significant loss of life, extensive property damage, and severe environmental pollution. This paper describes an innovative IoT-based Assembly Double Pipe System (IADPS) designed for the prevention, early detection, and automated isolation of toxic gas leaks. The proposed system features a double-layered pipe design, with nitrogen charged between the inner and outer pipes, and gas detectors installed at strategic locations. This configuration is intended to prevent pipe corrosion, suppress ignition caused by escaping gas, and facilitate the early detection of gas leaks, thereby mitigating the risk of safety accidents. Furthermore, the system includes a comprehensive real-time monitoring system for pipe integrity and gas leakage, as well as an automated gas leakage detection and isolation system to quickly respond to any incidents.

The search for sustainable and efficient energy conversion technologies is becoming increasingly critical in response to global energy and environmental challenges. Traditional lead-based piezoelectric materials, such as lead zirconate titanate (PZT), have high piezoelectric constant but present significant health problems and environmental risks due to their hazardous metal contaminants. This study addresses these concerns by investigating barium titanate (BTO), a lead-free alternative, and enhancing its performance using anisotropic nanowires (NWs) structures. BTO NWs were synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal method and incorporated into a poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] matrix to fabricate a piezoelectric composite film. The resulting device demonstrated a notable increase in electrical output compared to devices based on isotropic morphology of BTO nanoparticles, exhibiting enhanced performance. These findings suggest that BTO NWs hold significant promise for applications in flexible and wearable electronics, paving the way for further advancements in sustainable energy technology.

We investigated the potential of IO:H thin films and hydrogen doping to improve current density and fill factor for enhancing the performance of silicon heterojunction solar cells. We revealed that a transmittance of 86.7% and work function of 5.4 eV could be achieved by injecting 3 sccm of hydrogen gas. The lattice constant of 1.037 nm at the AB site indicates an anion antibonding tendency, and the work function increases as the Fermi level shifts to the valence band. Based on these findings, we fabricated a silicon heterojunction solar cell and achieved an efficiency of 18.53%, while computer simulation confirmed a conversion efficiency of 24.65%, an open-circuit voltage of 724 mV, and a fill factor of 82.72% at a current density of 41.15 mA/㎠.

Department of Electric Materials Engineering, Kwangwoon University, Seoul 01897, Korea (Received June 13, 2024; Revised July 8, 2024; Accepted July 10, 2024) Abstract: Wide bandgap (WBG) devices, especially SiC, are gaining traction as materials for high-power EV conversion devices due to their superior efficiency and switching capabilities compared to Si-based power devices. SiC allows for high power, high temperature, and high frequency applications because of its outstanding thermal conductivity, saturation velocity, and dielectric breakdown field. SiC-based MPS diodes combine the advantages of SiC-based SBDs and PiN diodes, allowing high-frequency switching operation with low leakage currents under high voltage conditions. However, MPS diodes exhibit snapback phenomena influenced by the P+ region’s size, necessitating optimization. A TCAD simulation studied the impact of the P+ region’s depth and width on MPS diode performance. Increasing the P+ width raised the On-specific resistance (Ron,sp) and lowered the maximum voltage during snapback (Vsnap). Increasing the depth decreased both Breakdown voltage (BV) and Vsnap. A trade-off between the semiconductor performance index BFOM and Vsnap was identified, leading to optimized dimensions. The optimized MPS diode shows a low Vsnap of about 3.89 V and a high BFOM of 1.72 GW·㎠, highlighting its potential as a next-generation high-performance power conversion device.

Quest for Comparing Direct-Current (DC) and Alternating-Current (AC) Poling Effects on Ferroelectric and Piezoelectric Materials

J Korean Inst Electr Electron Mater Eng 2024;37(6):563-581.   Published online November 1, 2024

Piezoelectricity refers to the phenomenon where mechanical stress is converted into electrical signals or, conversely, electrical signals are converted into mechanical stress. Ferroelectric materials, characterized by high dielectric permittivity and spontaneous polarization, retain their polarization even after the removal of an electric field. In such materials, poling plays a crucial role in enhancing the piezoelectric effect, with the process of aligning dipoles being known as poling. This review focuses on studies that have compared and analyzed the enhancement of piezoelectric properties in ceramics and polymers through two representative poling methods: AC poling (ACP) and DC poling (DCP). Even within the same category of ceramics or polymers, variations in piezoelectric properties are observed based on the material type, poling method, and poling conditions. Under certain conditions, ACP has been shown to provide superior poling effects compared to DCP. Through this review, we propose that ACP has the potential not only to replace the traditionally used DCP in the poling of piezoelectric materials but also to serve as a more effective method. This could spark increased interest in the study of poling methods for piezoelectric polymers, a field that has received relatively less attention.

Understanding the structure-property relationship in functional materials is crucial as microstructural features such as nano-precipitates, phase boundary, grain boundary segregation, and grain boundary phases play a key role in their functional properties. Atom probe tomography (APT) is an advanced analytical technique that allows for the three-dimensional (3D) mapping of atomic distributions and the precise determination of local chemical compositions in materials. Moreover, it offers sub-nanometer spatial resolution and chemical sensitivity at the tens of parts per million (ppm) level. Owing to its unique capabilities, this technique has been employed to uncover the 3D elemental distributions in a wide range of materials, including alloys, semiconductors, nanomaterials, and even biomaterials. In this paper, various kinds of examples are introduced for elucidating structure-property relationships on functional materials by utilizing the atom probe tomography.

Precise control over the morphology of nanostructures is critical for tailoring their physical and chemical properties. This study addresses the challenge of developing a simple, integrated method for synthesizing both 1D and 2D colloidal Cu nanostructures in a single system, achieving successful tuning of their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties. A facile hydrothermal synthesis utilizing potassium iodide (KI) and hexadecylamine (HDA) is presented for controlling Cu nanostructure morphologies. The key to achieving 1D nanowires (NWs) and 2D nanoplates (NPs) depends on the controlled adsorption of HDA molecules and iodide (I-) ions on specific crystal facets. Depending on the morphologies, the resultant Cu nanostructures exhibit tunable LSPR peaks from 558 nm [nanoplates (NPs)] to 590 nm [nanowires (NWs)]. These results pave the way for the scalable and cost-effective production of plasmonic Cu nanostructures with tunable optical properties, holding promise for applications in sensing, catalysis, and photonic devices.

In line with the development of electronic devices and technologies, the demand for improving ferroelectric materials’ performance is increasing. Since K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN), an eco-friendly ferroelectric material that does not use lead and has a high Curie temperature, it is attracting attention to its usability as a high-temperature dielectric, and various studies are being conducted to increase performance. In a KNN having a perovskite structure, there was a simulation result that the KNN has higher spontaneous polarization when the A-site in which sodium ions exist is replaced with lithium ions. If the simulation results can be proven experimentally, the application range of KNN-based ferroelectric materials will increase. To this end, we tried to manufacture a K1-xLixNbO3 (KLN) with high electrical characteristics by fabricating niobium-deficient and potassium-excessive compositions, which attempt was made to solve the stoichiometry problem by volatilization and suppress secondary phases. If KLN’s secondary phase suppression and relative permittivity improvement are successful, it will contribute to meeting the demand for developing electronic devices.

J Korean Inst Electr Electron Mater Eng 2024;37(4):412-419.   Published online July 1, 2024

Mn-doped Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3-PbTiO3 (Mn:PIN-PMN-PT) single crystals, which exhibit improved phase transition temperatures and coercive field properties compared to Pb(In1/2 Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMNPT) single crystals, are expected to be utilized in high-power acoustic transducers. Bridgeman method, growing single crystals along the axial direction from melt, is most widely used method for single crystal growth with large size and high quality. However, single crystal boules grown by the Bridgeman method demonstrate a PT compositional variation, giving rise a distribution of crystal structure and material properties along the growing axis. To employ piezoelectric single crystals grown by the Bridgeman method for acoustic transducers, it is essential to investigate their overall property distribution. In this study, the compositional distribution and property variation of Mn:PIN-PMN-PT single crystals grown by the Bridgeman method was investigated. Measured compositional distribution of PT was from 29% to 32.5% in the Rhombohedral crystal region of the boule. Two types of specimen, [011]-poled Mn:PIN-PMN-29PT and Mn:PIN-PMN-32PT single crystals, were fabricated and tested to obtain full property variation at both ends of the Rhombohedral crystal region. The properties related to the 32 directional vibration mode and the properties related to high-power driving were measured to confirm the overall distribution of properties by composition.
