Polymer nanocomposites incorporating inorganic nanofillers have emerged as highly promising electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials, combining mechanical compliance with robust conductive percolation networks. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are particularly attractive as conductive fillers because their high aspect ratio facilitates percolation at low loadings. Also, CNTs offer superior mechanical durability under deformation compared to rigid, fracture-prone metal nanowires. For EMI shielding, high electrical conductivity is critical as it enhances both reflection and absorption through efficient charge dissipation and conduction losses. However, achieving highly aligned conductive pathways without degrading the intrinsic electrical properties of CNTs remains a significant challenge. Here, we demonstrate a non-destructive magnetic surface-functionalization and alignment strategy. Using a polydopamine (PDA)-mediated route, pristine multiwalled CNTs are uniformly decorated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FMWCNTs). This enables highly effective magnetic field-driven alignment at fields as low as 10 mT, promoting the strategic formation of percolation networks. By optimizing the Fe₃O₄/MWCNT ratio for high saturation magnetization and uniform coverage, the aligned FMWCNTs exhibit significant electrical anisotropy, delivering a 10.7-fold higher electrical conductivity in the parallel configuration compared to the vertical configuration. These findings present a scalable, room-temperature platform for engineering directionally enhanced conductivity in polymer nanocomposites, with broad applicability in advanced EMI shielding, flexible electronics, and advanced packaging technologies.

β-Ga2O3 is an ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor promising for high-power electronic applications; however, heteroepitaxial growth on sapphire is challenging lattice and symmetry mismatch. In this study, β-Ga2O3 thin films were grown on C-plane sapphire substrates with various off-axis angles (0–12°) using mist-CVD, and the influence of substrate miscut on structural and optical properties was investigated. All films grown at 900°C exhibited (-201) oriented β phase. The crystal quality was strongly dependent on the off-axis angle, with intermediate off-axis angles (Δa = 6–8°) showing the narrowest rocking curve width. Off-axis substrates promoted step-aligned growth behavior compared to on-axis growth. Optical measurements revealed enhanced transmittance and wider bandgap values (4.92–4.95 eV) for off-axis samples compared to the on-axis film (4.69 eV). The findings provide practical guidelines for optimizing heteroepitaxial β-Ga2O3 growth on low-cost sapphire substrates for high-performance device applications.

The potential of replacing crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) with an eco-friendly alternative, polypropylene (PP), as insulating material is investigated for overhead power distribution lines. Although XLPE exhibits excellent electrical and mechanical properties, the byproducts generated during crosslinking pose environmental challenges. PP is a viable alternative because of recyclability and absence of byproducts during crosslinking. This study evaluated alternating current (AC) breakdown strength, contact angle, and tracking resistance of two commercially available XLPE samples and three types of PP (PP1, PP2, PP3) with varying additive content. AC breakdown strength, analyzed using the Weibull distribution, facilitated relative comparison of insulation performance. PP2 exhibited scale parameters comparable to or exceeding those of XLPE. Contact angles exceeding 90° displayed hydrophobicity across all samples. To address pass/fail evaluation limitations, arcing images from tracking tests were analyzed using the box-counting method for fractal dimension analysis. Fractal dimensions increased with arcing extent, and complexity increased with test duration. Tracking resistance performance order was PP3, PP1, CC, PP2, OC which was attributed to enhanced heat dissipation properties of filler additives. The proposed quantitative method for comparing tracking resistance through fractal dimension analysis, explored the feasibility of using PP insulating materials in overhead power distribution lines.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JEEM.2026.39.1.7
The increasing global demand for renewable energy has accelerated the deployment of offshore wind farms, thereby highlighting the need for advanced development and performance assessment techniques for dynamic submarine cables used in floating offshore wind systems. These cables are continuously subjected to combined thermal, electrical, and mechanical stresses, with mechanical loading playing a particularly dominant role. As a result, dynamic submarine cables exhibit degradation behaviors that differ significantly from those of conventional fixed submarine cables. This paper presents the design and implementation of a comprehensive evaluation system capable of applying combined thermal, electrical, and mechanical stresses to dynamic submarine cables. The system was validated using a 66 kV wet type submarine cable through commissioning tests and insulation performance measurements. Electrical stress of 72 kV, thermal stress exceeding 95°C, and mechanical stress corresponding to a bending radius of 20 times the cable diameter over 20 cycles were applied to verify system reliability. The subsequent insulation assessments quantitatively confirmed performance variations induced by the combined stresses. The results demonstrate that the proposed platform is the first system capable of simultaneously applying thermal, electrical, and mechanical stresses to dynamic submarine cables, and its operational performance has been successfully validated. This platform enables realistic reliability evaluation of dynamic cables used in floating offshore wind farms and is expected to improve the overall operational reliability of offshore wind power systems.

Ceramic thin plates are widely utilized in various advanced technologies, such as fuel cells and heat dissipation substrates, due to their high mechanical strength and thermal conductivity. However, the trend of thinning ceramic plates increases warpage, which can critically affect product quality and reliability. Therefore, understanding and accurately measuring this warpage has become increasingly important. In this study, a non-contact measurement method, the light sectioning technique, was applied to measure the warpage of thin ceramic plates with a half-cell (anode/electrolyte) structure for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) by varying their area and thickness. The relationship between the physical properties of the thin plates and the warpage was analyzed. Additionally, a comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate warpage errors caused by compressive loads during the traditional contact measurement process. Finally, to verify the reliability of the non-contact measurement method, four types of non-contact measurement techniques - light sectioning technique, laser displacement measurement, optical confocal technique, and white-light interferometry technique - were used to compare warpage data by orientation. The results were also compared with those from contact measurement methods to analyze the average warpage values. Through this, the superiority and high reliability of the non-contact measurement method were demonstrated.

κ-phase Ga₂O₃ is a wide-bandgap semiconductor that has attracted attention for power and optoelectronic device applications. However, its crystal quality and optical properties are highly dependent on the growth temperature, which motivates the need for a systematic study. In this work, κ-Ga₂O₃ thin films were grown on AlN/sapphire templates using mist-CVD at different temperatures. At lower temperatures (400℃), films exhibited incomplete crystallization and partial opacity, whereas higher growth temperatures (500-700℃) produced transparent films with improved properties. The bandgap was found to increase with temperature, consistent with reported values for 600-700℃, and XRD/XRC analysis confirmed that crystal quality improved with higher growth temperature. AFM analysis further revealed reductions in surface roughness and grain size variation at elevated temperatures. These findings indicate that an optimal growth window of 600-700℃ enables high-quality κ-Ga₂O₃ films, with potential implications for integrating this material on other hexagonal substrates such as SiC and GaN.

To ensure the long-term reliability of flexible photovoltaic (FPV) modules, it is crucial to develop an effective moisture barrier layer that prevents the infiltration of moisture and oxygen. We developed such a layer composed of parylene (700 nm) and AlOx (70 nm), optimizing its material properties, moisture-blocking performance, and processing conditions. The barrier layer applied to the Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) substrate demonstrated a water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 6.33 × 10-2 g/m²/day and an average visible light transmittance (AVT) of 85.3% over the 380-780 nm wavelength range. For the FPV module with this barrier, Damp/Heat (DH) reliability testing was conducted at 85℃ and 85% relative humidity for up to 1,000 hours. During testing, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) decreased slightly from 25.4% (0 hr) to 24.7% (1,000 hr), reflecting a minimal reduction of only 0.7%. The primary cause of degradation was identified as a -4% relative change in shortcircuit current density (JSC) before and after DH testing. Consequently, the ETFE/parylene/AlOx multilayer moisture barrier proved highly effective in ensuring the long-term reliability of solar modules.

Understanding the structure-property relationship in functional materials is crucial as microstructural features such as nano-precipitates, phase boundary, grain boundary segregation, and grain boundary phases play a key role in their functional properties. Atom probe tomography (APT) is an advanced analytical technique that allows for the three-dimensional (3D) mapping of atomic distributions and the precise determination of local chemical compositions in materials. Moreover, it offers sub-nanometer spatial resolution and chemical sensitivity at the tens of parts per million (ppm) level. Owing to its unique capabilities, this technique has been employed to uncover the 3D elemental distributions in a wide range of materials, including alloys, semiconductors, nanomaterials, and even biomaterials. In this paper, various kinds of examples are introduced for elucidating structure-property relationships on functional materials by utilizing the atom probe tomography.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2024.37.5.12
Precise control over the morphology of nanostructures is critical for tailoring their physical and chemical properties. This study addresses the challenge of developing a simple, integrated method for synthesizing both 1D and 2D colloidal Cu nanostructures in a single system, achieving successful tuning of their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties. A facile hydrothermal synthesis utilizing potassium iodide (KI) and hexadecylamine (HDA) is presented for controlling Cu nanostructure morphologies. The key to achieving 1D nanowires (NWs) and 2D nanoplates (NPs) depends on the controlled adsorption of HDA molecules and iodide (I-) ions on specific crystal facets. Depending on the morphologies, the resultant Cu nanostructures exhibit tunable LSPR peaks from 558 nm [nanoplates (NPs)] to 590 nm [nanowires (NWs)]. These results pave the way for the scalable and cost-effective production of plasmonic Cu nanostructures with tunable optical properties, holding promise for applications in sensing, catalysis, and photonic devices.

Piezoelectric ceramics play an important role in various electronic applications. However, traditional ceramics are difficult to be used in some complicated structures, due to their low flexibility and high brittleness. To solve this problem, this study prepared and investigated ceramic/polymer composites that can utilize a good flexibility of polymers. Polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) and 0.77(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3-0.23SrTiO3 (BNST23) ceramics were selected to fabricate the composites. Ceramic/polymer composites were prepared using various volume fractions of BNST23 ceramics. The distribution of piezoceramic particles in BNST23/PVDF-TrFE composites was investigated using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The dielectric and piezoelectric properties of the composites were significantly influenced by the volume fraction of the piezoelectric ceramics. As a result, the highest piezoelectric constant (d33) of 56 pC/N was obtained in a composites with 70% volume fraction of BNST23 ceramics. Accordingly, it is expected that BNST23/PVDF-TrFE composites can be applied to various sensor applications.

In this paper, in order to analyze high electrical insulation and cooling performance using mineral oil, the liquid insulating oil was changed in electrode shape and distance between electrodes to compare and analyze electrical characteristics according to equal electric field, quasi-equivalent electric field, and unequal electric field. As a result, the breakdown voltages were 36,875 V and 36,875 V in the form of sphere-sphere and plate-plate electrodes with equal electric fields. The breakdown voltage was 31,475 V in the sphere-plate electrode type, which is a quasi-equilibrium field, and the breakdown voltage was 28,592 V, 27,050 V, and 22,750 V in the needle-needle, sphere-needle, and needle-plate electrode types, which are unequal fields. Through this, it is possible to know the difference in breakdown voltage according to the type of electric field. The more equal the field, the higher the breakdown voltage, and the more unequal field, the lower the breakdown voltage. The difference in insulation breakdown voltage could be seen depending on the type of electric field, the insulation breakdown voltage was higher for the more equal electric field, and the insulation breakdown voltage was lower for the more unequal electric field. Also, it was confirmed that the closer the distance between the electrodes, the higher the insulation breakdown voltage, the higher the insulation breakdown current, and the insulation breakdown voltage and the insulation breakdown current were proportional.

Heaters using the resistance heating principle are used in various industrial fields that require heat and are also essentially used in bidet among small home appliances. A planar heater and a coil-inserted heater mounted on a conventional commercially used bidet have disadvantages and limitations of complicated manufacturing process and local heating. In this study, silver-palladium (Ag-Pd) powder material was used for a screen-printing process that is more advantageous in achieving simplification than the existing process, and a rod-type heater for bidet was manufactured. The on-off cycle test under actual conditions was conducted to confirm the durability and the capability of the fabricated heater, and the fabricated heater operated more than 2,600 on-off cycles, which means it could be applied for a commercial product. In addition, through the on-off cycles under harsh conditions, the cause of failure was identified after the test that the durability limit temperature of the heater was 850℃. Through Ag-Pd rod heater in this study, it is expected to contribute to the efficient development of electrode materials for heaters and the improvement of the durability of heaters in the future.

Magnetoelectric (ME) properties of 3-0 type particulate composites have been investigated with respect to application features for reliable magnetic sensitivity and magnetically-induced output voltage. In order to figure out the magnetoelectric characteristics in the ME composites, frequency dependent ME responses were studied from [0.948 Na0.5K0.5NbO3-0.052 LiSbO3]-[Co1-xZnxFe2O4] (NKNLS)/Co1-xZnxFe2O4 (CZFO, x=0, 0.1, and 0.2). As a result, the maximal αME of 23.15 mV/cm·Oe was achieved from the NKNLS-CZFO (xZn = 0.1) composites at resonance frequency of 315 kHz and Hdc = 0 Oe. From the frequency dependent ME responses, it is clearly described that the self-biased ME composites can be used for applications as both magnetic sensors and energy harvesters, respectively.

Inorganic-organic hybrid perovskite solar cells have demonstrated considerable improvements, reaching 25.5% of certified power conversion efficiency in 2020 from 3.8% in 2009. In normal structured perovskite solar cells, TiO2 electrontransporting materials require heat treatment process at a high temperature over 450℃ to induce crystallinity. Inverted perovskite solar cells have also been studied to exclude the additional thermal process by using [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as a non-oxide electron-transporting layer. However, the drawback of the PCBM layer is a charge accumulation at the interface between PCBM and a metal electrode. The impact of bathocuproin (BCP) buffer layer on photovoltaic performance has been investigated herein to solve the problem of PCBM. 2-mM BCP-modified perovskite solar cells were observed to exhibit a maximum efficiency of 12.03% compared with BCP-free counterparts (5.82%) due to the suppression of the charge accumulation at the PCBM-Au interface and the resulting reduction of the charge recombination between perovskite and the PCBM layer.

Copper-chromium alloys have been used as contact materials of vacuum interrupters in circuit breakers, but new materials with highly stable performance are required to break the high voltage and high current barrier due to the recent increase in breaking capacity. In this paper, a new contact material was fabricated from a ternary alloy instead of existing Cu-Cr alloys. Its breaking performance and endurance were verified from a synthetic test and compared with that of various contact materials. The test results verified that the breaking performance of the new contact material was excellent.

A Study on the Optimal Flash-Point of WDF Production
Jin Lee, Hwaseong Kim
J Korean Inst Electr Electron Mater Eng 2020;33(4):310-314.   Published online July 1, 2020
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.33.4.11
Although waste oil derived fuel (WDF) production technology was developed under a government initiative ~10 years ago, it became stagnant owing to the small size of participating companies, residents’ rejection of foul odor, and the nature of the technology for recycling waste that was avoided. However, this subject is under the spotlight again because of recent developments, such as garbage crisis. In particular, plastic is the most difficult waste to dispose of, with more than 4 million tons of plastic waste produced every year according to statistics from the Ministry of Environment. The most effective method for treating plastic waste is to produce WDF through low temperature thermal decomposition. The WDF includes several volatile ingredients that mostly limit the use of fuel for boilers, owing to safety concerns. In particular, flash point is legally stipulated because of secondary contamination in the distribution process and the risk of fire and explosion. It is required that external shipments (distribution) should be maintained in the range of at least 30~60℃ (excluding explosion prevention facilities) for diesel power generation. Therefore, this study seeks to find the flash point that is best suited to WDFs produced from plastic waste.

J Korean Inst Electr Electron Mater Eng 2020;33(2):118-122.   Published online March 1, 2020
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.33.2.8
Inorganic-organic hybrid perovskite solar cells have demonstrated a significant achievement by reaching a certified power conversion efficiency of 25.2% in 2019 as compared to that of 3.8% in 2009. However, organic hole conductors such as PTAA and spiro-OMeTAD are known to be expensive and unstable when they are exposed to operational conditions. In this study, the inorganic hole conductor CuSCN was used to overcome such concerns. The influence of dipropyl sulfide (DPS) and diethyl sulfide (DES) as CuSCN deposition solvents on the underlying perovskite active layer was investigated. DES solvent was observed to be advantageous in terms of CuSCN solubility and mild for the perovskite layer, thereby resulting in a power conversion efficiency of 16.9%.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2019.32.4.349
A fire, be it caused intentionally or unintentionally, leads to economic loss and physical damage, and requires digestion. The number of fires is increasing yearly, and electrical fires account for more than 30% among the main causes of fires. Electric wires that catch fire typically employ silicone coatings; silicone has organic as well as inorganic properties. Silicon is a natural, nonexistent, synthetic product with numerous applications. In this study, a silicon rubber for application in wires was prepared by high-temperature vulcanization (HTV) with a Shore A hardness of 70. We report results for the flame retardancy test and the fire safety characteristics via inorganic analysis. For this, a quartz inorganic material was added to the wire specimen, and 18% powdered extinguishing agent ammonium phosphate and expanded vermiculite respectively. Thus, expanded vermiculite showed the best flame retardancy and fire safety characteristics.

J Korean Inst Electr Electron Mater Eng 2019;32(3):196-200.   Published online May 1, 2019
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2019.32.3.196
In this study, photoluminescence (PL) analysis was performed to evaluate the optical properties of commercial ZnO substrates. Particular attention was paid to the bound exciton (BX) luminescence, which is usually the strongest emission intensity of commercial substrates. At 15 K, PL analysis revealed that the BX peak due to donor-type impurities (donor-bound-exciton; DX) dominated, while two-electron satellite (TES) emission, donor-accepter pair (DAP) emission, and LO-phonon replica emission were also observed. The impurity concentration of the ZnO substrate was determined to be 1015 to 1016/cm3 by examination of the temperature variation of DAP, while the half width and intensity change of the luminescence revealed that the temperature change of BX can be interpreted almost the same as the analysis of free-exciton emission.

J Korean Inst Electr Electron Mater Eng 2018;31(7):490-495.   Published online November 1, 2018
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2018.31.7.490
A multielectrode electronic paper film capable of expressing a single-color image was fabricated by injecting color electronic ink into an electronic paper panel; on the basis of its reflective or transparent properties, it is possible to control the expression of six single-color images and their transmittance. In this study, a single-color image was represented by driving a multielectrode electronic paper film; color coordinates were measured. The six capable single colors were yellowish pink (0.444, 0.354), white (0.355, 0.352), black (0.241, 0.241), orange (0.514, 0.360), reddish orange (0.606, 0.338), and reddish purple (0.469, 0.145). Color particles used in this paper were black and white, by which six colors are accomplished, but more single-color images can be combined by using cyan, magenta, and yellow particles.

Because of the rapidly changing environment and high uncertainties, the semiconductor industry is in need of appropriate forecasting technology. In particular, both the cost and time in the test process are increasing because the process becomes complicated and there are more factors to consider. In this paper, we propose a prediction model that predicts a final “good” or “bad” on the basis of preconditioning test data generated in the semiconductor test process. The proposed prediction model solves the classification and regression problems that are often dealt with in the semiconductor process and constructs a reliable prediction model. We also implemented a prediction model through various machine learning algorithms. We compared the performance of the prediction models constructed through each algorithm. Actual data of the semiconductor test process was used for accurate prediction model construction and effective test verification.

Effects of Particle Size of Al2O3 on the Mechanical Properties and Micro-Structures of Al2O3-3YSZ Composites
Jea-jung Yoon, Seung-yeop Chun, Jin-ah Hwang, Su-young Park, Myoung-pyo Chun
J Korean Inst Electr Electron Mater Eng 2017;30(1):7-12.   Published online January 1, 2017
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2017.30.1.7
3YSZ + (x) Al2O3 composites (x = 20, 40, 60, 80 wt%) were fabricated and the influences of particle sizes of Al2O3 on their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated with XRD, SEM, vickers hardness and fracture toughness. Al2O3-3YSZ composites containing Al2O3 powder of a 0.3 μm and an 1.0 μm, which are here in after named as Al2O3(0.3 μm)-3YSZ and Al2O3 (1.0 μm)-3YSZ, respectively, were made by mixing raw materials, uni-axial pressing and sintering at 1,400℃, 1,500℃, and 1,600℃. Al2O3 (0.3 μm)-3YSZ composites show the higher density and the better mechanical properties than Al2O3 (1.0 μm)-3YSZ composites. The Vickers hardness of the Al2O3 (0.3 μm)-3YSZ composites show a peak value of 1,997 Hv at the content of 60 wt% Al2O3, which is a slightly higher value in comparison with 1,938 Hv of the Al2O3(1.0 μm)-3YSZ composite. However, the fracture toughness of Al2O3-3YSZ composites monotonically increases with decreasing the content of Al2O3 without any peak values. Al2O3 (0.3 μm)-3YSZ and Al2O3 (1.0 μm)-3YSZ composites sintered at 1,600℃ have a maximum value of a 6.9 MPa·m1/2 and a 6.2 MPa·m1/2, respectively at the composition of containing 20 wt% Al2O3. It should be noticed that the mechanical properties and the sintering density of the Al2O3-3YSZ composites can be enhanced by using more fine Al2O3 powder due to their denser microstructure and smaller grain size.
