Lee Kyung Bae, Moon Kee Choi
J Electr Electron Mater 2025;38(1):21-32.   Published online January 1, 2025
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2025.38.1.3
Smart electronic skin (E-skin) is an emerging technology that integrates electronic devices with human skin, enhancing human-machine interactions. One critical challenge in its development is effective thermal management to ensure device reliability, longevity, and user comfort. This review highlights passive cooling techniques - thermal conduction, convection, radiation, and phase-change materials - as key strategies to address this challenge without additional power consumption. These integrated mechanisms have demonstrated the ability to efficiently dissipate heat, preventing thermal buildup and maintaining optimal performance in E-skin devices. Recent advancements indicate that combining these methods can significantly enhance the thermal management of flexible electronics. Future research should focus on refining these materials and techniques to overcome challenges related to cost, durability, and environmental stability, thereby advancing the practical application of E-skin technology.

Sang-il Lee, Youn-chan Hong, Young-cho Kim
J Electr Electron Mater 2018;31(7):490-495.   Published online November 1, 2018
A multielectrode electronic paper film capable of expressing a single-color image was fabricated by injecting color electronic ink into an electronic paper panel; on the basis of its reflective or transparent properties, it is possible to control the expression of six single-color images and their transmittance. In this study, a single-color image was represented by driving a multielectrode electronic paper film; color coordinates were measured. The six capable single colors were yellowish pink (0.444, 0.354), white (0.355, 0.352), black (0.241, 0.241), orange (0.514, 0.360), reddish orange (0.606, 0.338), and reddish purple (0.469, 0.145). Color particles used in this paper were black and white, by which six colors are accomplished, but more single-color images can be combined by using cyan, magenta, and yellow particles.

J Electr Electron Mater 2016;29(11):685-689.   Published online November 1, 2016
Synthesis of the fluorescent Au nanoclusters is reported. The Au nanoclusters were synthesized via reduction of gold ions in reverse micelles with mild reducing agents. The Au nanoclusters show a bright red emission at 640 nm. The fluorescent Au nanoclusters attract great interest for sensor, electronic device and bio-imaging applications because of ultra-small size, high chemical stablity and bright emission. We believe that the fluorescent Au nanoclusters can have optoelectronic applications such as optical down conversion phosphors.

Hyun Ho Gu, Bong Ho Kim, Young Joon Yoon
J Electr Electron Mater 2016;29(11):690-695.   Published online November 1, 2016
Induction cooktop has a great attention due to its safety, quick heating and cleanness compared to gas oven. However, the materials for induction cookware is limited to steel or stainless-steel which has the magnetic property. Recently, it has been tried to apply various porcelain to induction cookware after printing the silver layer on the bottom of cookware plates and co-firing at high temperature. Glass frits are added in the silver paste to improve an adhesion force between porcelain materials containers and transferred silver layer. The hybrid silver pastes for induction cookware requires the proper electrical resistance and the thermal conductivity with base plates. After sintering process at 800℃, a part of melted glass migrated to the porcelain and the rest of the glass frit was exposed to the surface. It was confirmed that most of the glass frit formed an adhesion layer between the porcelain and transferred silver layer that enhances the adhesion force.

High Voltage and Discharge Engineering : Electrical Properties of Wet Bars in Water-cooled Generator Stator Windings
Byeong Rae Kim, Hee Dong Kim
J Electr Electron Mater 2012;25(10):817-823.   Published online October 1, 2012
Insulation breakdown of water-cooled generator stator windings occurs frequently due to leakage of cooling water and absorption into the insulation material. Leakage and absorption problems of water-cooled stator windings are often found during regular preventive maintenance. To evaluate cooling water leakage and absorption, diagnostic tests were performed on two water-cooled turbine generators, which have been in service for 13 and 17 years, respectively. The test results of the measured electrical properties such as dissipation factor (tano), capacitance and AC leakage current for water-cooled generator stator windings with wet bars are reported in this paper.

J Electr Electron Mater 2011;24(5):387-391.   Published online May 1, 2011
A uncooled infrared ray sensor used in an infrared thermal imaging detector has many advantages. But because the uncooled infrared ray sensor is made by MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) process variation of offset is large. In this paper, to solve process variation of offset a ROIC for uncooled infrared ray sensor that has process variation of offset compensation technique using differential delta sampling and reference signal compensation circuit was proposed. As a result of simulation that uses the proposed ROIC, it was possible to acquire compensated output characteristics without process variation of offsets.

Semiconduclor : Adaptive Multiuser MIMO Transmission in Wireless Systems with Cooperating Cells
Jin Hee Lee, Young Chai Koo
J Electr Electron Mater 2011;24(2):102-107.   Published online February 1, 2011
In multicell wireless systems with insufficient frequency reuse, user transmission will suffer other-cell interference (OCI). Cell cooperation is an effective way to mitigate OCI and increase the system sum rate. An adaptive scheme for serving one user in each cell was proposed in [1]. In this paper, we generalize that scheme by serving two users in each cell with adaptive zeroforcing beamforming (ZF) strategies. Based on our derived statistics of the signal-to-noise plus interference ratios, we choose the scheme to maximize the total ergodic sum-rate based on user locations. Through the numerical examples, we show that the total system sum rate can be improved by selecting appropriate transmitting strategy adaptively. As a result, our proposed system can explore spatial multiplexing gain without additional power and thus improves total system sum rate significantly.
