Regular Paper : A Study on Output Characteristics of the π-type Piezoelectric Harvester

Generating output characteristics of a π-type piezoelectric harvester depending on size of the ceramic and the elastic body were studied. The π-type piezoelectric harvester consists of a rectangular piezoelectric ceramic and a π shaped elastic body. If the tensions is applied at both ends of an elastic body legs, the piezoelectric effect occurs at the ceramics through the form change of the elastic body. The structure of this π-type harvester can be used in a various area than an existing type generator, because it prevent from direct pressure to the ceramic. Generating characteristics of the harvester were analyzed by using finite element method program. The piezoelectric harvester was fabricated on the basis of analyzed results and attached on a frequency controllable vibrator to measure the output characteristics. And generating characteristics were defined by comparing analysis results and experimental results. The highest output voltage was obtained when the ceramic length, thickness were 20 mm, 0.5 mm in the analysis result. And experiment was performed by analysis results at low frequency region, output voltage was generated about 6 V.

Regular Paper : Development of the Ultrasonic Transducers for the Degradation of TCE in Aqueous Solution

This paper describes the development of a piezoelectric flextensional transducer, which aims toeffectively degrade the TCE contained in aqueous solution. In order to adjust the 1st flextensionalresonant frequency and output displacement of the flextensional transducer, the effect of the geometricalvariations on performance was analyzed using the finite element analysis (FEM). The results indicatedthat the effect of external shell`s thickness and curvature were most significant, and experimentalfabrication and characterization of a transducer was performed to confirm the results. To prove the capacity to degrade the TCE contained in aqueous solution, 50 and 100 ppm of TCE were prepared in sealed chamber, and investigated the removal rate of TCE through the time and initial concentration.

Temperature Stability of Electro-mechanical Coupling Factors of PZT Ceramics

In this paper, PZT piezoelectric ceramic specimens with 4 compositions (Zr/Ti=50/50, 53/47, 56/44, 58/42) in Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 system were fabricated. We studied effects of poling strength and thermal aging on the temperature characteristics of eletromechanical coupling factor k31 of the specimens, which were poled with the DC electric fields, 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 kV/mm respectively and thermally aged for an hour at 200℃. The eletromechanical coupling factor k31 of the specimen with the composition Zr/Ti=53/47, nearest to the morphotropic phase boundary decreased the most greatly, irrelevant to the intensity of poling field, due to 1st thermal aging. And the temperature coefficient of eletromechaical coupling factor k31 was(-) in the ereragonal phase composition and (+) in the rhombohedral phase composition, which is reverse in the temperature coefficient of resonance frequency. It is interesting that eletromechanical coupling factor k31 of PZT ceramics is shown to be able to be able to increase as temperature increase in the interval -20~80℃.

Generating output characteristics of a EYE-type piezoelectric generator depending on ceramic size and materials of the elastic body were studied. EYE-type piezoelectric-generating device consist of the ceramic was attached between the both elastic body. piezoelectric-generating is that if the tension occurred at both ends of an elastic body, the piezoelectric effect occurs at ceramics through the form change of the elastic body. The structure of this EYE-type generator use various area. than a existing type generator, because the ceramic position of the directly force at does not apply. Resonance and output characteristics of the generator were analyzed by using FEM program. Generators were fabricated on the basis of analyzed results and attached on a frequency controllable vibrator to measure output characteristics. Also, the experimental results were compared with the simulated results. As a result, output characteristics of the generator increased depending on the increase in ceramic thickness. In case of increase in ceramic width, resonance frequency of the generator also decreased.

Thin Films and Sensors : Real-time Blood Pressure Monitoring in Porcine Tibial Artery Using LC Resonant Pressure Sensor

We have developed an implantable wireless sensor for real time pressure monitoring of blood circulation system. MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) technology was adopted as a sensor development method. The sensor is composed of photolithographically patterned inductors and a distributed capacitor in gap between the inductors. A resulting LC resonant system produces its resonant frequency in range of 269 to 284 MHz at 740 mmHg. To read the resonant frequency changed by blood pressure variation, we developed a custom readout system based on a network analyzer functionality, The bench-top testing of the pressure sensors showed good mechanical and electrical functionality. A sensor was implanted into tibial artery of farm pig, and interrogated wirelessly with accurate readings of blood pressure. After 45 days, the sensor`s electrical response and histopathology were studied with good frequency reading and biocompatibility.
