There is an increasing demand for freeform stretchable display technologies capable of overcoming spatial limitations in next-generation platforms such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). To realize such stretchable displays, all constituent materials—including semiconductors, electrodes, insulators, and substrates—must exhibit sufficient mechanical elasticity. To date, stretchable gate insulators have primarily relied on organic polymers such as poly(4-vinylphenol-co-methyl methacrylate) (PVP-co-PMMA). However, their practical application is significantly limited by poor electrical properties, including low dielectric constant and instability. In this work, we propose a novel gate insulator structure that minimizes the use of solution-based processes, which often suffer from poor uniformity and may damage underlying layers during fabrication. The proposed structure integrates the advantages of both organic and inorganic materials by employing a hybrid configuration. Specifically, high-k HfO2 thin films are deposited on both the top and bottom of an organic layer composed of PVP-co-PMMA, poly(melamine-co-formaldehyde) (PMF) as a crosslinking agent, and propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate (PGMEA) as a solvent. This inorganic–organic–inorganic structure effectively compensates for the inherent electrical limitations of organic materials. As a result, the fabricated thin-film transistors (TFTs) exhibit improved electrical performance and reliability compared to devices employing a single organic gate insulator.

J Electr Electron Mater 2022;35(1):93-97.   Published online January 1, 2022
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2022.35.1.14
We report highly efficient quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) with TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) as an alternative electron transport layer (ETL) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as an insulating layer. TiO2 NPs were applied as ETLs of inverted structured QLEDs and the effect of the addition of PMMA between ETL and emission layer (EML) on device characteristics was studied in detail. A thin PMMA layer supported to make the charge balance in the EML of QLEDs due to its insulating property, which limits electron injection effectively. Green QLEDs with a PMMA layer produced the maximum luminance of 112,488 cd/㎡ and a current efficiency of 25.92 cd/A. We expect the extended application of TiO2 NPs as the electron transport layer in inverted structured QLEDs device in the near future.

J Electr Electron Mater 2020;33(3):194-200.   Published online May 1, 2020
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.33.3.7
Perylene bisimide derivatives are developed for red organic phosphor because of their advantages, such as excellent luminous efficiency and high thermal stability. Despite these advantages, they have poor solubility characteristics in organic solvents and short emission wavelength as red organic phosphor for hybrid light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this study, we prepared terrylene bisimide using a coupling reaction and swallow-tail imide group, which has excellent solubility. The structures and properties of swallow-tail terrylene bisimide (9C) were analyzed using 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), UV/Vis spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The maximum absorption wavelength of (9C) in the UV/Vis spectrum was 647 nm, and the maximum emission wavelength was 676 nm. In the TGA, (9C) demonstrated good thermal stability with less than 5 wt% weight loss up to 415℃. In the solubility test, (9C) has a good solubility of more than 5 wt% in chloroform and dichloromethane. When the compounds (9C) were mixed with PMMA (polymethly methacrylate), the films showed peaks at 680 nm in the PL spectra. The results verify the suitability of (9C) as a red organic phosphor for hybrid LEDs.

J Electr Electron Mater 2019;32(1):86-92.   Published online January 1, 2019
Although perylene bisimide derivatives have advantages such as excellent thermal stability and high luminance efficiency, they have poor solubility characteristics in organic solvents. In this research, in order to improve the solubility characteristics, we prepared perylene bisimide derivatives (1C) and (2C) with swallow-tail substituted imide, which is known to lead to excellent solubility. The structures and properties of swallow-tail perylene bisimide (1C) and (2C) were analyzed by 1H-NMR, FT-IR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The maximum absorption wavelengths of (1C) and (2C) in the UV/Vis spectrum were 558 nm and 556 nm, respectively, and the maximum emission wavelengths were 602 nm and 600 nm, respectively. In the TGA, (1C) demonstrated good thermal stability with less than 5 wt% weight loss up to 242℃. In the solubility test, (1C) and (2C) exhibited solubilities of more than 5 wt% in chloroform, ethyl acetate, and dimethylformamide, but not in methanol. When the compounds (1C) and (2C) were mixed with PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), thin films showed peaks at 679 nm and 677 nm, respectively, in the photoluminescence spectra. (1C) was found to be a possible candidate as red organic phosphor for hybrid LEDs.

Seung Min Lee, Yeon Tae Jeong
J Electr Electron Mater 2017;30(9):577-582.   Published online September 1, 2017
The white light of a hybrid LED is obtained by using red and green organic fluorescent layers made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) films, which function as color down-conversion layers of blue light-emitting diodes. In this research, we studied the fluorescence properties of a red organic fluorophore, employing perylene bisimide derivatives applicable to hybrid LEDs. The solubility, thermal stability, and luminous efficiency are important characteristics of organic fluorophores for use in hybrid LEDs. The perylene fluorescent compounds (1A and 1B) were prepared by the reaction of 4-bromophenol and 4-iodophenol with N,N`-bis(4-bromo-2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1, 6,7,12-tetrachloroperylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyl diimide (1) in the presence of dimethyl formaldehyde (DMF) at 70℃. The synthesized derivatives were characterized by using 1H-NMR, FT-IR, UV/Vis absorption and PL spectra, and TGA analysis. Compounds 1A and 1B showed absorption and emission at 570 nm and 604 nm in the UV/Vis spectrum. We also documented favorable solubility and thermal stability characteristics of the perylene fluorophores in our work. Perylene fluorophore 1, with the 4-bromophenol substituent 1A, exhibited particularly good thermal stability and solubility in organic solvents.

Han-sang Kim, Sung-jin Kim
J Electr Electron Mater 2017;30(7):413-416.   Published online July 1, 2017
We investigated solution-processed indium-yttrium-oxide (IYO) TFTs using apoly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) passivation layer. The IYO semiconductor solution was prepared with 0.1 M indium nitrate hydrate and 0.1 M yttrium acetate dehydrate as precursor solutions. The solution-processed IYO TFTs showed good performance: field-effect mobility of 13.13 ㎠/Vs, a threshold voltage of 8.2 V, a subthreshold slope of 0.93 V/dec, and a current on-to-off ratio of 7.2 × 106. Moreover, the PMMA passivation layers used to protectthe IYO active layer of the TFTs, did so without deteriorating their performance under ambient conditions; their operational stability and electrical properties also improved by decreasing leakage current.

We report the studies on the red organic phosphor by using perylene bisimide derivatives. Even though perylene bisimide derivatives have excellent thermal stability and luminous efficiency, they have low solubility in organic solvents. In this research, modified perylene bisimide derivative, N,N`-Bis(4-bromo-2, 6-diisopropylphenyl)- 1, 6, 7, 12-tetraphenoxyperylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxyl bisimide (1C), has been prepared by the reaction of phenol with N,N`-Bis(4-bromo-2, 6-diisopropylphenyl)-1, 6, 7, 12-tetrachloroperylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxyl bisimide (1B) in presence of DMF, at 70℃. The synthesized (1C) was characterized by using 1H-NMR, FT-IR, UV/V is spectroscopy, and TGA. The absorbtion and emission of (1C) was shown at 576 nm and 610 nm in UV/V is spectrum. In TGA thermogram, (1C) showed good thermal stability without significant weight loss to 220℃. And in the solubility analysis, (1C) with phenoxy group showed the good solubility in general organic solvents. The blended films of (1C) with PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) at different weight % concentration such as 10, 5, 1 weight % have been prepared. The blended film was shown at 616 nm when monitored at 450 nm in PL emission spectra.

Young Taek Lim, Paik Kyun Shin, Sunwoo Lee
J Electr Electron Mater 2015;28(11):727-730.   Published online November 1, 2015
In this paper, we fabricated organic compounds detector using the MWCNT/PMMA (multi-walled carbon nanotube / polymethylmethacrylate) composite film. We used polymer film as a matrix material for the device framework, and introduced CNTs for reacting with the organic compounds resulting in changing electrical conductivity. Spray coating method was used to form the MWCNT/PMMA composite film detector, and pattern formation of the detector was done by shadow mask during the spray coating process. We investigated changes of electrical conductivity of the detector before and after the organic compounds exposure. Electrical conductivity of the detector tended to decrease after the exposure with various organic compounds such as acetone, tetrahydrofuran(THF), toluene, and dimethylformamide (DMF). Finally we conclude that organic compounds detection by the MWCNT/PMMA composite film detector was possible, and expect the feasibility of commercial MWCNT/PMMA composite film detector for various organic compounds.

Regular Paper : Porosity Control in LSM Electrode Formation in Layered Plannar SOFC Module
Won Jun Lee, Dong Hun Yeo, Hyo Soon Shin, Dea Yong Jeong
J Electr Electron Mater 2014;27(12):866-870.   Published online December 1, 2014
In solid oxide fuel cell system, yttria-stabilized zirconia is generally adopted as the electrolyte, which has high strength and superior oxygen ion conductivity, and the air electrode and the fuel electrode are attached to this. Recently, new structure of ``layered planar SOFC module`` was suggested to solve there liability problem due to the high temperature stability of a sealing agent and a binding material. In this study to materialize the air electrode in a layered planar SOFC module, the LSM ink was coated to form homogeneous electrode in the channel after the ink preparation. As the porosity control agent, PMMA oractive carbon powder was adopted with use of a commercial dispersant in ethanol. The optimal amounts of both the porosity control agents and the dispersant were determined. Four (4) vol% of the dispersant for the LSM-PMMA case and 15 vol% for LSM-carbon powder showed the lowest viscosities respectively to indicate the best dispersed states of the slurries. With PMMA and carbon powder, sintered LSM ink shows the relatively homogeneous distributions of pores and with increases of the agents, the porosities increased in both cases. From this, it can be thought that the amount of the PMMA or carbon powder could be used to control the porosity of the LSM ink.

A Study of Fabrication and Estimation Passive Matrix Display Using Electronic Bead
Yoo Mi Oh, Sun Woo Park
J Electr Electron Mater 2012;25(3):224-228.   Published online March 1, 2012
We have developed new materials that lead to methyl meth acrylate monomer and styrene monomer to using polymerization method. The materials have a powder form and show liquid behavior. We call the "Electronic Bead". An our experiment, a positive-charged particle has TiO2, polymer and CCA(-), while a negative-charged particle consists of carbon black, polymer and CCA(+). The charged particles have electrical characteristic of white -10 uC/g and black 10 uC/g, respectively. Also, these particles have good fluidity by additive of nano-sized silica. Using these materials, we demonstrated prototype displays that have 320×320 array of pixels and 6-in-diagonal viewable image size, driven by passive-matrix addressing. The reflectivity shows about 30% even though our experiment is at the beginning point. Also, the panel has contrast ratio 6:1. We think there are many chances to improve reflectivity through modifying components of particle resin, mixture ratio of each particle, panel structure and so on.
