The internet of things (IoT) technology is a key component for the advent of 4th industrial revolution, which is the network of home appliances, infrastructures, and vehicles to remotely investigate these systems. For the operation of compact IoT devices, batteries are widely used as electric power, and the limited lifetime of batteries inevitably leads to periodic replacement. Magneto-mechano-electric (MME) generators may be alternatives to batteries inside the IoT devices by converting stray magnetic field into electric energy, since we are always surrounded by ambient alternating current (AC) magnetic fields induced from electric power transmission lines everywhere. This article reviews the recent domestic research progress in high-performance MME generators and their application field for IoT and electronic devices.

Thermal Resistance Characteristics and Fin-Layout Structure Optimization by Gate Contact Area of FinFET and GAAFET
Jaewoong Cho, Taeyong Kim, Jiwon Choi, Ziyang Cui, Dongxu Xin, Junsin Yi
J Electr Electron Mater 2021;34(5):296-300.   Published online September 1, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.4
The performance of devices has been improved with fine processes from planar to three-dimensional transistors (e.g., FinFET, NWFET, and MBCFET). There are some problems such as a short channel effect or a self-heating effect occur due to the reduction of the gate-channel length by miniaturization. To solve these problems, we compare and analyze the electrical and thermal characteristics of FinFET and GAAFET devices that are currently used and expected to be further developed in the future. In addition, the optimal structure according to the Fin shape was investigated. GAAFET is a suitable device for use in a smaller scale process than the currently used, because it shows superior electrical and thermal resistance characteristics compared to FinFET. Since there are pros and cons in process difficulty and device characteristics depending on the channel formation structure of GAAFET, we expect a mass-production of fine processes over 5 nm through structural optimization is feasible.

Practical Guide to the Characterization of Piezoelectric Properties
Woo-seok Kang, Geon-ju Lee, Wook Jo
J Electr Electron Mater 2021;34(5):301-313.   Published online September 1, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.5
Theoretical background for the meaning of various piezoelectric properties can be easily found in a number of textbooks and academic papers. In contrast, how they are actually measured and characterized are rarely described, though this information would be the most important especially to the researchers who just started working on the field. It follows that this report was intended to provide a practical guidance for measuring basic but essential properties of ferroelectric-based piezoelectric materials. The discussion begins with how to measurement dielectric properties such as dielectric permittivity and loss (dissipation factor), followed by piezoelectric properties such as piezoelectric constants, electromechanical coupling factor, and quality factor as well as ferroelectric features, i.e., electric field dependent polarization hysteresis. Though our discussion here is limited to the techniques that are already well-standardized, it is expected to make a seed to be developed into more challenging and creative ones.

J Electr Electron Mater 2021;34(5):314-320.   Published online September 1, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.6
Controlling ambient humid condition through high performance humidity sensors has become important for various fields, including industrial process, food storage, and the preservation of historic remains. Although aerosol deposited humidity sensors using ceramic BaTiO3 (BT) material have been widely studied because of their longtime stability, there remain critical disadvantages, such as low sensitivity, low linearity, and slow response/recovery time in case of the sensors fabricated at room temperature. To achieve superior humidity sensing properties even at room temperature condition, BT-Cu composite films utilizing aerosol deposition (AD) process have been proposed based on the percolation theory. The BT-Cu composite films showed gradually improved sensing properties until the Cu concentration reached 15 wt% in the composite film. However, the excessive Cu (above 30 wt%) containing BT-Cu composite films showed a rapid decrease of the sensing properties. The results of observed surface morphology of the AD fabricated composite films, to figure out the metal filler effect, showed correlation between surface topography as well as size and the amount of open pores according to the metal filler content. Overall, it is very important not only dielectric constant of the humidity sensing films but also microstructures, because they affect either the variation range of capacitance by ambient humidity or adsorption/desorption of ambient humidity onto/from the humidity sensing films.

Ju Hwan Lee, Dai-hyun Kim
J Electr Electron Mater 2021;34(5):321-326.   Published online September 1, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.7
We fabricated BiAlO thin film by a solution process with a brush coating to be used as liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer. Solution-processed BiAlO was coated on the glass substrate by brush process. Prepared thin films were annealed at different temperatures of 80℃, 180℃, and 280℃. To verify whether the BiAlO film was formed properly, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis was performed on Bi and Al. Using a crystal rotation method by polarized optical microscopy, LC alignment state was evaluated. At the annealing temperature of 280℃, the uniform homogenous LC alignment was achieved. To reveal the mechanism of LC alignment by brush coating, field emission scanning electron microscope was used. Through this analysis, spin-coated and brush coated film surface were compared. It was revealed that physical anisotropy was induced by brush coating at a high annealing temperature. Particles were aligned in one direction along which brush coating was made, resulting in a physical anisotropy that affects a uniform LC alignment. Therefore, it was confirmed that brush coating combined with BiAlO thin film annealed at high temperature has a significant potential for LC alignment.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.8
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become a main energy storage device in various applications, such as portable appliances, renewable energy facilities, and electric vehicles. However, the poor thermal stability of LIBs may cause explosion or fire. The thermal runaway is the result of a failure of the separator inside LIB. Damages like tearing, piercing, and collapsing of the separator were simulated in a mechanical, an electrical, and a thermal way, and small discharge pulses of a few mV were detected at the time of separator damages. From the experimental results, this paper provided a method that can identify the separator failure before thermal runaway in the aspect of a potential explosion and fire prevention measures.

Fabrication of Bulk High-Tc Superconductor
Sang Heon Lee
J Electr Electron Mater 2021;34(5):333-336.   Published online September 1, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.9
Oxide YBCO bulk superconductors are manufactured using the melt process. Because seed crystal growth method utilizes a slow-spreading layer-by-layer reaction, a long-term heat treatment is required to manufacture a single-crystal specimen of several cm. In this study, the melt process method was applied to compensate for the shortcomings of the seed crystal growth method. The thickness of the upper and lower pellets of the YBCO bulk was molded to 40 mm, and YBCO superconductor was produced by heat treatment. The measurement results of capture magnetism was in line with the literature. This results in a relationship that the higher the growth of Y211 particle in the YBCO, the higher the superconducting properties. We analyzed the YBCO superconductor, focusing on the Y2BaCuO5 particle distribution.

Shin Kim, Eun-doe Song, Hae-jin Hwang, Joo-sung Lee, Sang-ok Yoon
J Electr Electron Mater 2021;34(5):337-341.   Published online September 1, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.10
Phase evolution, thermal and microwave dielectric properties of cordierite-Al2O3 composite were investigated. As the content of Al2O3 increased, mullite, sapphirine, and spinel were formed as secondary phases, implying that cordierite may be decomposed by the reaction with Al2O3. All sintered specimens exhibited dense microstructures. The densification occurred through liquid phase sintering. As the content of Al2O3 increased, the thermal expansion coefficient and the dielectric constant increased, whereas the quality factor decreased. The thermal expansion coefficient, the dielectric constant, and the quality factor of the 90 wt% cordierite 10 wt% Al2O3 composite sintered at 1,425℃ were 2.9×10-6 K-1, 5.1, and 34,844 GHz, respectively.

Sang-ok Yoon, Seoyoung Hong, Hyung-hwan Cho, Shin Kim
J Electr Electron Mater 2021;34(5):342-347.   Published online September 1, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.11
Phase evolution, sintering behavior, microstructure, and microwave dielectric properties of (1-x) mol Ba3V4O13 - (x) mol BaV2O6 system were investigated. The sintered specimens of all compositions consisted of Ba3V4O13 and BaV2O6, and no secondary phase was observed. As x increased, the linear shrinkage decreased to the composition of x=0.5, and then increased again, implying that Ba3V4O13 and BaV2O6 phases interfered mutually with each other during sintering. All compositions showed a dense microstructure with a large grain growth. Cracks were observed in some compositions because of the relatively high sintering temperature of 620~640℃. As x increased, the dielectric constant increased, while the quality factor was maintained from about 50,000 GHz to about 70,000 GHz up to the composition of x=0.9, and then decreased to 20,987~27,180 GHz at the composition of x=1.0. As x increased, the temperature coefficient of the resonance frequency showed a (+) value from a (-) value. The dielectric constant, the quality factor, and the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency of x=0.7 composition sintered at 640℃ for 4 hours were 10.61, 71,126 GHz, and -4.9 ppm/℃, respectively. This composition showed a good chemical compatibility with Al powder, indicating that the Ba3V4O13-BaV2O6 ceramics are a candidate material for ULTCC (Ultra-Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramics) applications.

Choon-nam Cho, Jae-sin Myung
J Electr Electron Mater 2021;34(5):357-363.   Published online September 1, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.13
Recently, as interest in appearance has increased, various studies on treatment method for short stature are being conducted. In this study, the effect of growth plate stimulation on the height growth of children and adolescents was studied. As a result of pre- and post-analysis of the experimental group, it was confirmed that the difference in average height according to growth plate stimulation was relatively large. In addition, in the results of analyzing the effects of demographic factors on the height growth of the experimental group and the control group, weight showed the greatest influence on height growth among the demographic factors affecting the height growth of the experimental group. The effect on the height growth of the control group was found to have an effect in the order of age, weight, and father’s height. The difference in height changed post-mortem between the experimental group and the control group was 1.10 cm for 3 months, and the difference was the result of growth plate stimulation. It was confirmed that growth plate stimulation had a significant effect on the height change of children and adolescents, except for weight, which is a common factor of height change in the experimental and control groups. Therefore, it is expected that it can be used as a treatment method for short stature.

A Study on Dielectric Properties of Flame-Retardant Silicone Rubber Due to Silica Amount Change
Sung Ill Lee
J Electr Electron Mater 2021;34(5):364-370.   Published online September 1, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.14
In this study, the dielectric properties of flame retardant silicone rubber mixed with the amount of silica 50~65 phr were measured at frequencies ranging from 1 to 2.7 MHz and temperature ranges from 30℃ to 160℃. The permittivity decreased with higher frequencies and higher temperatures, and tanδ are thought to have decreased due to the increased heat oxidation of the methyl group bound to Si, which increased the hardness of silicone rubber. FT-IR analysis of specimen mixed with SiO2 of 50~65 phr showed oscillations of OH groups bound to SiO2 between wavenumber 3,600 and 3,300. As a result of analyzing surface components by Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) on all specimens mixed with SiO2 of 50 to 65 phr, all specimens contained Si, and the analysis by field emission scanning electron (FE-SEM) confirmed that about 1~5 μm particles were distributed regularly on the surface of the specimens.

A Study on the Control Characteristics of Line Scan Light Source for Machine Vision Line Scan Camera
Tae-hwa Kim, Cheon Lee
J Electr Electron Mater 2021;34(5):371-381.   Published online September 1, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.15
A machine vision inspection system consists of a camera, optics, illumination, and image acquisition system. Especially a scanning system has to be made to measure a large inspection area. Therefore, a machine vision line scan camera needs a line scan light source. A line scan light source should have a high light intensity and a uniform intensity distribution. In this paper, an offset calibration and slope calibration methods are introduced to obtain a uniform light intensity profile. Offset calibration method is to remove the deviation of light intensity among channels through adding intensity difference. Slope calibration is to remove variation of light intensity slope according to the control step among channels through multiplying slope difference. We can obtain an improved light intensity profile through applying offset and slope calibration simultaneously. The proposed method can help to obtain clearer image with a high precision in a machine vision inspection system.

Effect of Internal Bias Field on Poling Behavior in Mn-Doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-29 mol%PbTiO3 Single Crystal
Geon-ju Lee, Hwang-pill Kim, Ho-yong Lee, Wook Jo
J Electr Electron Mater 2021;34(5):382-385.   Published online September 1, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.16
Electrical poling is a crucial step to convert ferroelectrics to piezoelectrics. Nevertheless, no systematic investigation on the effect of poling has been reported. Given that the poling involves an alignment of spontaneous polarization, the condition for poling should be different when a material has an internal bias field that influences the domain stability. Here, we present the effect of poling profile on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties in Mn-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-29 mol%PbTiO3 single crystal with an internal bias field. We showed that both the dielectric permittivity and the piezoelectric coefficient were further enhanced when the poling procedure ends with a field application along the opposite direction to the internal bias field. We expect that the current finding would give a clue to understanding the true mechanism for the electrical poling.

Room-Temperature Ferromagnetic Behavior in Ferroelectric BiFeO3-BaTiO3 System Through Engineered Superexchange Path
Nu-ri Ko, Jae-hyeon Cho, Jongmoon Jang, Wook Jo
J Electr Electron Mater 2021;34(5):386-392.   Published online September 1, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2021.34.5.17
Multiferroics exhibiting the coexistence and a possible coupling of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric order are attracting widespread interest in terms of academic interests and possible applications. However, room-temperature single-phase multiferroics with soft ferromagnetic and displacive ferroelectric properties are still rare owing to the contradiction in the origin of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity. In this study, we demonstrated that sizable ferromagnetic properties are induced in the ferroelectric bismuth ferrite-barium titanate system simply by introducing Co ions into the A-site. It is noted that all modified compositions exhibit well-saturated magnetic hysteresis loops at room temperature. Especially, 70Bi0.95Co0.05FeO3-30Ba0.95Co0.05TiO3 manifests noticeable ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties; the spontaneous polarization and the saturation magnetization are 42 μC/㎠ and 3.6 emu/g, respectively. We expect that our methodology will be widely used in the development of perovskite-structured multiferroic oxides.
